After more than 25 years of existence, the happy hour ban may finally be lifted in Illinois, which would make happy hour drink specials legal in Chicago and throughout the rest of the state. Lawmakers passed a bill in the House last week and in the Senate on Sunday to give bars a bit of a boost in sales and to improve the local tax base. Now we are just waiting on approval from Governor Bruce Rauner.
If passed, the Culinary and Hospitality Modernization Act would allow bars in Illinois to have happy hour specials four hours per day with a maximum of 15 hours per week, but would still prohibit them from having two-for-one deals and late night happy hours after 10:00pm. These part-day specials have been illegal since 1989, which has forced bars in Chicago, Champaign and other parts of the state to either offer drink specials all day long or offer none at all. The new legislation could open up opportunities for bars to do better business by allowing them to offer certain specials during off-peak hours.
We love the Windy City and all of its nooks and crannies. No matter where you are, you can always find a bar that has the perfect atmosphere and even some drink specials. Whether you want to taste one of the best local brews or you are looking to enjoy a fancy mixed beverage, there are plenty of hot spots in all of the neighborhoods throughout Chicago.
